A record 22,500 runners are taking part in the 40th Dublin Marathon which is now underway

International elite runners will compete against Ireland’s top endurance athletes - while for others, the prize is simply getting to the finish.

A runner in today's event is taking part in his second marathon in less than 24 hours

Mark Conlon, who is raising awareness for St.Vincent de Paul and homelessness, ran the equivalent marathon distance last night from 2 am.

For safety reasons, he did 8 loops of a circuit in Clontarf along the seafront and says the low nighttime temperatures were the toughest part of the challenge.

Mark felt he was getting hypothermia at one point doing the middle of his 26.5 mile route but managed to achieve his goal before heading to the start line for the official marathon this morning.
