A man in his 30s who was shot in the head in Dublin last night is in a serious condition in hospital.

The man - who was shot in the North inner city - drove himself to Store Street Garda Station after being attacked.

An ambulance was called and he was treated at the scene before being transferred to the nearby Mater hospital.

He remains there this morning and is understood to be in a serious but stable condition.

Detectives are now appealing to the public for information and are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them.

There are a number of road closures in the area as gardai forensic examiners are on the scene.

Motorists are advised to take an alternate route where possible.

And the Luas Red line is only operating to and from Abbey street for the time being.
