Thousands of students across the country are joining protests calling for more action on climate change.

Demonstrations are being held in 60 towns and cities here including Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Cork.

They're urging politicians to take more urgent action to address the current crisis.

The global strike is inspired by Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg.

It comes just days before world leaders gather in New York for a United Nations Emergency Climate Summit.

Minister for Climate Action, Richard Bruton says he has heard the voices of student.

He says to date, the government has failed: 'They are a constant reminder to governments, that governments must lead this change. There has been a lack of commitment in the past in our own case in Ireland although we made commitments to deliver a 20% reduction we have failed to achieve that.
