The player may have jumped the gun by revealing it yesterday, but Leinster have officially confirmed the signing of Australian International Scott Fardy.

The 32-year-old Wallaby has 39 caps for Australia, playing a key role in their run to the World Cup final in 2015 under Michael Cheika.

And although Fardy's most significant rugby has come in the back row, Leinster's embarrassment of riches in that department means that he'll mainly be used as a second row for Leo Cullen's side.

"Scott is a player of considerable talent and experience and we are looking forward to welcoming him to Leinster," Cullen says.

"In order to compete consistently on two fronts in the Guinness PRO12 and the Champions Cup we need to have competition across the team and while Scott has played a lot of rugby in the back row, we have signed Scott as a second row and believe he will complement the second row options that we already have here in Leinster."

Fardy will join the province this summer, following the conclusion of the Super Rugby season, ending a five year relationship with the Brumbies.

The news comes as a blow to former Leinster coach and current Wallaby boss Michael Cheika, who will now lose Fardy from his selection pool.

Currently, they'll only consider foreign-based players if they have at least 60 caps, or have played seven years of Super Rugby in Australia.
